Work

“You have brains in your head
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself any direction you choose
You’re on your own
And you know what you know
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

~ Dr. Seuss (Theodore Giessel)

We were given an assignment at work, and I couldn’t resist using this as a reason to write!! The assignment was to commit to new ideas to making work fun again, and to describe how you will own and represent excellent customer service in your stores. Of course, being the dweller that I am, this has been a constant on my mind since I was given this task!!!!

I cannot help but compare these work-related attributes to daily life outside of the work place. It really comes down to being a good person, and wanting to bring the best out of other people. Whether those people are friends, family, employees, customers, or even your enemies. And no the last two are not one in the same, although there are those days!!!! I am sure there are plenty of new ways to bring these concepts back, but I cannot help but convert back to the old school days.

There was a time when this was the standard, there was no other option. People are number one, employees and customers alike. If you remember this basic foundational piece the rest is done for you. People want to be appreciated, respected, and not taken advantage of. They want you to be honest and polite. Treat them as you would want to be treated. Of course everyone has a bad day here and there, but it is usually not the person’s fault that you are taking it out on. There is even a bonus…it’s infectious!

Keep it simple! If you want a fun work environment, be fun when you are there. Focus, urgency, and efficiency can all be achieved in the attitude that you choose. That feeling will spread like a wild-fire. Happy Store Manager = Happy Employees = Happy Customers! Problem solved!
